How to break 5: reaching a low single-digit handicap
Under 5, nothing is easy anymore. Gains come from small edges: wedge distance control, short putts and knowing exactly where you lose shots.
A Handicap Index under 5 means scores around par to the mid-70s are normal.
The plan
- 01
Track your stats
Fairways, greens, putts, up-and-downs and penalties. Practise what the numbers say, not what feels fun.
- 02
Wedge distance control
Have three swing lengths for each wedge so every distance from 40–110 m is a known shot.
- 03
Hole everything inside 2 metres
Short putts are where low handicaps save or lose rounds. Drill them daily.
- 04
Play in competitions
Tournament rounds under pressure build the game that holds up.
