How to become a scratch golfer (0.0 or plus)
A scratch golfer plays to a Handicap Index of 0.0. Plus handicaps go even further. It takes years of structured practice — and it's the top of the EARNED ladder.
A scratch golfer is expected to shoot around the course rating on a normal day.
The plan
- 01
Practise with a plan
Structured sessions with measurable targets, ideally guided by a coach.
- 02
Gain distance and accuracy
At scratch level, driving distance with control is a significant advantage.
- 03
Master the mental game
Accept bad shots, commit to every decision, and play one shot at a time.
Common questions
- What is a plus handicap?
